Jayanto Tan
He/him
Jayanto Tan explores hidden cultural and self-identity through a practice crossing slow ceramic sculpture, authentic food, installation and performance. He was born in a small village in North Sumatra, Indonesia from Sumatran Christian mother and Guandong, China Taoist father, and now lives on the Gadigal Wangal Country in Sydney’s Inner West. As an immigrant visual artist, who fled poverty and political repression in search of a better life, his practice blends Eastern and Western mythologies and contextualises them with current events. Jayanto’s work has been shown nationally and internationally. He won the Georges River Sculpture Art Prize 2021. Currently he is preparing shows for Maitland Regional Art Gallery and Atrium Space Incinerator Gallery Melbourne. He has been awarded grants from the City of Sydney, Inner West Council and NAVA. He is represented by Art Atrium Gallery.
