Sumugan Sivanesan

Sumugan Sivanesan is a writer, researcher and artist. Between 2013 and 2018 he collaborated with the then Tamil refugee and controversial media figure Sanjeev ‘Alex’ Kuhendrarajah on a series of texts and artworks gathered under the banner Alex & I. While on residency at the Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2014 he began a micro-publishing project, Theoretically Tamil, a reference to the ‘little Tamil magazines’ which disseminated new ideas about art and politics in the Tamil speaking world in the 1980s and 1990s. Born in Malaysia and raised in Australia, Sumugan currently lives in Berlin.

4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art would like to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which we live, work and create. We recognise the enduring connections between First Nations people and the land, waters, culture and communities that have existed for over 60,000 years. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
